Larkrise Cottage

Larkrise Cottage was the gamekeeper's cottage on the Billlesley Estate. It became a large family home in the 1980s and has been offering Bed & Breakfast accommodation for over 20 years. The cottage lies at the end of the Ridgeway, an old salt pack horse way that goes back to Roman times. Today most people arrive by car but others can use the 229 bus from Stratford or the train and walk from Wilmcote station, some 15 mins away. The cottage was built between the World Wars as part of the expansion of Iron Gate Farm. Upper Billesley lies on the watershed of the Avon valley above the medieval deserted village of Billesley. The village dates back to 705 and the farming community developed successfully until the early 14th Century when the Black Death accounted for most of the villagers and the local Lord of the Manor moved sheep onto the land. All that remains of the village today is part of the moat, a dovecote and All Saints' Church. Shakespeare is alleged to have married Ann Hathaway at Billesley Church but little evidence remains. This is where his granddaughter, Sarah Nash, was married.
